How it could have been

"With respect to commitments in other areas, such as levels of news and
spoken word, the Commission considers that setting across-the-board
requirements would not take into account the particular needs of
different communities or the differing resources of licensees."

Canadian Radio & Television Commissions in its 1998 review of news and  talk requirements

  ABOUT US

More Music Less Talk is a consumer focused voluntary lobby group of
music fans who are disenfranchised about the way Irish radio has failed to provide adequate music choices for music fans.

The AM band is dead and has been for years yet in most countries it thrives. The FM band is full of talk and news from community talk shows to talk shows on local radio to yet more talk and news from RTE and even the music stations are forced to do talk shows!!! Have you ever tried turning on the radio from around 4 minutes before to 8 minutes past the hour?

The BCI have continually failed to understand the desire of music fans to be able to listen and enjoy music freely without interruption of long 10 minute news shows every hour along with talk shows and other interference in the music we love. Why? It's actually the law. In Ireland we actually have a law that requires all radio stations that they must do 20% news and current affairs along with general speech, even on music stations. We have not found a crazy law like this anywhere else in the world so far through our research.

Imagine the outcry if all TV stations had to break up a movie or football game every hour to bring the viewer 10 minutes of news!!"

The minister of communications has the power to change the act through
amendments to the 1988 or 2001 acts and the BCI can give a derogation  from this 20% but they consistently refuse to. In fact they have now decided to license yet more talk by looking to actually license a semi-national talk station!!! Again music fans have suffered.

In Ireland we will now have a choice every mid morning of talk, talk, mostly talk or talk from the 4 main, soon to be national/quasi national stations.

We want change. Help us and hundreds of thousands of music fans across
Ireland, who are being ignored by the BCI in their licensing. Let the music breath.

FAQ'S

Why is there so much talk on the radio?

It's the law. Under the broad casting acts of 1988 and amended in 2001, ALL radio stations must do a minimum of 20% news and current affairs. this is before you add general speech and talk, ads and station promos. There is very little room for music.

Who is responsible?

The RTE Authority for the RTE stations and the BCI (Broadcasting Commission of
Ireland) for all other non-RTE stations but ultimately the minister for communications is responsible for the act.

Why do all stations sound the same?

For non-RTE stations the BCI have refused again in 2005 to give any derogation
during 7am-7pm (the main time people actually listen to radio) from the 20% news and current affairs requirement.

Does this happen in other countries?

Not that we can find. We have searched extensively and found no other region where ALL stations are forced to do this. Click here for more information
