"With respect
to commitments in other areas, such as
levels of news and
spoken word, the Commission considers
that setting across-the-board
requirements would not take into account
the particular needs of
different communities or the differing
resources of licensees." |

Today FM has one of the worst
records for playing music on daytime radio. We
took 4 sample hours at random chosen by a
non-regular listener of Today fm. The 4 hours
picked were the 10am, 12pm, 4pm and 6pm hours on
a random day during that week. Ray Darcy only
played 4 songs in his hour from 10 to 11am with
the rest of the time spent talking or playing
ads. Matt Cooper had the worst record at playing
0 songs in the 6pm hour as this is a “news and
talk” show which hardly fits well for first time
listeners turning on Today fm at that time
expecting to hear music. In the 4 hours surveyed
Today fm only played 23 songs with Philip Cawley
playing the most music. |

This hour from 6
to 7pm is basically a full hour of talk
with NO MUSIC whatsoever yet the BCI are
licensing a fulltime talk station to go
all talk on a national basis at this
time also along with RTE radio1 which is
also all talk during this hour. RTE 2fm
has a heavy talk emphasis during this
hour also so music fans have NO national
outlet for any music let alone pop music
even during this hour. |
|
|
|
(Note: The name of all the songs
have not been identified by the researcher. If the title
and artist of a song is unknown then the genre is
logged. Percentages are estimated as an approximate
percentage on a 60 minute hour) All categories are
rounded off to the nearest minute as some talk and songs
are not exact 60 second minutes. |

|
FAQ'S |
|
Why is there so much talk
on the radio? |
|
It's the law.
Under the broad casting acts of 1988 and
amended in 2001, ALL radio stations must
do a minimum of 20% news and current
affairs. this is before you add general
speech and talk, ads and station promos.
There is very little room for music. |
|
|
|
|
 |
|
Who is responsible? |
|
The RTE Authority
for the RTE stations and the BCI
(Broadcasting Commission of
Ireland) for all other non-RTE stations
but ultimately the minister for
communications is responsible for the
act. |
|
|
|
|
 |
|
Why do all stations sound
the same? |
|
For non-RTE
stations the BCI have refused again in
2005 to give any derogation
during 7am-7pm (the main time people
actually listen to radio) from the 20%
news and current affairs requirement. |
